Diocletian’s architects inserted an arch into the pediment between the two central columns, creating a fastigium, a stage-like space, for the imperial appearances.Churches appeared modest and unassuming on their exteriors.Only their interiors, brimming with mosaics, painting and marble colonnades marked that design with a strong design skill.
